Snowbird Storage in Indio: What to Do With Your Stuff When You Head Home for Summer

Snowbird Storage in Indio: What to Do With Your Stuff When You Head Home for Summer

Every April, the Coachella Valley starts to quiet down. The snowbirds head north, the festivals wrap up, and temperatures start climbing past 100 degrees. If you spend winters in Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, or anywhere in the valley, you know the drill — and you know the question that comes up every year: what do I do with everything I can’t take home?

Patio furniture, golf clubs, a second set of kitchen supplies, holiday decorations, that extra car or golf cart — it all needs to go somewhere safe for five or six months while you’re back in Canada, Minnesota, or wherever summer takes you.

That’s exactly why so many seasonal residents store with us at AAA Storage of Indio.

Why Drive-Up Units Matter in the Desert

We hear this from snowbirds all the time: “I just want to pull up, unload, and go.” That’s how every one of our 284 units works. Every unit at AAA Storage is ground-level with a drive-up door. No elevators, no hallways, no dragging boxes through a building in 110-degree heat.

You back your vehicle right up to your unit door. Load in, lock up, and you’re on your way to the airport or starting the drive north. When you come back in October or November, everything is right where you left it.

What Size Do Snowbirds Usually Need?

It depends on how much you’re storing, but here’s what we typically see:

5×10 unit works if you’re storing a few pieces of patio furniture, boxes of kitchen items, and some sports equipment. Think of it as a large walk-in closet.

10×10 unit is our most popular size for snowbirds. It fits a full patio set, golf clubs, bicycles, seasonal decorations, small appliances, and plenty of boxes. It’s roughly the size of a bedroom.

10×20 unit is what you need if you’re storing furniture from a furnished rental or a significant amount of household goods. Some snowbirds use this size when they’re between rentals and need to store almost everything.

We also have outdoor parking spaces for RVs, boats, trailers, and vehicles. A lot of our seasonal residents leave a car or golf cart here over the summer rather than driving it 2,000 miles home.

Storing in Desert Heat: Will My Stuff Be Okay?

This is the number one question we get. The Coachella Valley hits 120 degrees in July and August, so it’s a fair concern.

Here’s what holds up fine in a standard drive-up unit: furniture (wood, metal, and most upholstery), kitchen items, tools, sports equipment, clothing, books, and boxes of household goods. We’ve had snowbirds storing with us for 10+ years with no issues.

What you should be careful with: candles (they will melt), vinyl records, anything with a wax component, and certain electronics like old CRT monitors. Photographs and important documents do better in sealed plastic bins rather than cardboard boxes.

One tip our regulars swear by: put a moisture absorber (like DampRid) in your unit before you lock up for the summer. The valley is dry, but it gives extra peace of mind.

Month-to-Month Leases for Seasonal Use

We don’t lock you into a year-long contract. All our leases are month-to-month, which is exactly what seasonal residents need. Rent for five months, six months, eight months — whatever matches your schedule. Cancel anytime with no penalty.

And if you’re renting for the first time, your first month is just $1. After that, we guarantee your rate won’t increase for 12 months.

Military and Senior Discounts

A lot of our snowbird community are retired military or seniors. We offer 10% off for military, first responders, and government employees, and 5% off for seniors. Discounts apply after the promotional first month.

Location and Access

AAA Storage is at 82521 Market Street in Indio, right off the I-10. If you’re coming from La Quinta, it’s about 10 minutes up Washington Street. From Palm Desert, take Monterey Avenue to the freeway and you’re here in 15 minutes.

Gate access hours are 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, seven days a week. The office is open 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Saturday. If you’re doing a last-minute pack-up before an early flight out of Palm Springs International, you can be loading your unit by 6 AM.

Reserve Before You Leave

The best time to reserve a unit is a few weeks before you head home for the summer. Our most popular sizes fill up in April and May as snowbirds start packing up. You can check current availability and pricing at aaastorageofindio.com/rates or call us at (760) 342-5911.

We’ve been serving the Coachella Valley for over 20 years. If you’re a seasonal resident looking for a place to keep your things safe and accessible, come see us on Market Street. We’ll help you find the right size unit and get you set up before you head north.
